چکیده

Introduction Civil wars arguably pose the most serious problem to security in the contemporary world. Since the end of World War II, internal conflicts have become much more frequent than wars among states (Sollenberg and Wallensteen 2001). Accordingly, it does not come as a surprise that most conflict analysts have increasingly come to shift their research toward civil wars (Lake 2003). There is a vibrant, interdisciplinary literature that applies sophisticated research methods, including statistics and formal modeling, to such conflicts (Sambanis 2004).

Flow Variables Prediction Using Experimental, Computational Fluid Dynamic and Artificial Neural Network Models in a Sharp Bend

Bend existence induces changes in the flow pattern, velocity profiles and water surface. In the present study, based on experimental data, first three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model is simulated by using Fluent two-phase (water + air) as the free surface and the volume of fluid method, to predict the two significant variables (velocity and channel bed pressure) in 90º sharp...

Reducing Computational and Memory Cost of Substructuring Technique in Finite Element Models

Substructuring in the finite element method is a technique that reduces computational cost and memory usage for analysis of complex structures. The efficiency of this technique depends on the number of substructures in different problems. Some subdivisions increase computational cost, but require little memory usage and vice versa. In the present study, the cost functions of computations and me...

When Civil Wars Recur: Conditions for Durable Peace after Civil Wars

We argue that the duration of the peace after civil wars is mainly a function of the extent to which the outcome of the previous civil war preserved a condition of multiple sovereignty and the extent to which the post-civil war environment creates incentives for dissident groups to resort to violence rather than sustain the peace. Hazard models suggest that the outcome of the previous conflict ...

Measuring the Economic Impact of Civil War

Civil wars impose substantial costs on the domestic economy. We empirically measure the economic impact of such internal wars. The paper contributes to the existing literature both theoretically and methodologically. First, it explores the economic channels through which civil war affects growth. Previous studies have shown the negative growth effects of civil wars. We go a step further by iden...

On Calibration and Application of Logit-Based Stochastic Traffic Assignment Models

There is a growing recognition that discrete choice models are capable of providing a more realistic picture of route choice behavior. In particular, influential factors other than travel time that are found to affect the choice of route trigger the application of random utility models in the route choice literature. This paper focuses on path-based, logit-type stochastic route choice models, i...
